ÒShit!Ó

I looked over the low wall into my neighbourÕs garden. ÒYou having problems with that door Louise?Ó I hadnÕt heard her swear before.

ÒYou could say that George. I bought these new tee hinges because the old ones were rusted through and now I find the post is too rotten for the screws to hold the bottom one. IÕll have to go to B & Q in town and get another piece of wood.Ó

ÒYouÕd go all the way into town and pay a high price for a piece of wood when your next door neighbour has a woodworking business and probably more than enough in his scrap box?Ó

ÒNot from choice, but you know what Gregory is like when he sees me even talking to you.Ó

ÒHeÕs afraid that my handsome physique and natural charm will seduce you away from him?Ó

ÒHardly.Ó She giggled as she looked at me in my old, blue bib-and-brace overalls. Her face registered shock when I clambered over the wall and jumped down on to her lawn. ÒHeÕs in his office, heÕll see you.Ó

ÒLet him, you need professional advice on this job. Have you determined how far the rot extends?Ó She shook her head, no. ÒThen you really do need professional advice.Ó

After prodding the surrounding woodwork with my pocket-knife for some minutes and suggesting that all the cladding on the front of the shed needed to be renewed, Louise looked despondent. ÒItÕs not your fault or anything you did that caused the problem. The previous owners tried to hide the shed by planting bushes in front and these kept the wood damp and didnÕt allow them to creosote it. You removed the shrubs, but the damage was already done. The bottom of the door is rotted and so are most of the lower boards either side.Ó

ÒWhat are you doing here Carter?Ó The angry voice I knew belonged to LouiseÕs husband.

ÒLouise wasÉÓ

ÒMrs. Sillett to you Carter.Ó

I wasnÕt about to go down that route, not for that pompous, arrogant, stuck-up pratt. ÒAs we are neighbours and as she needs advice on a wood rot problem, IÕll stick to Louise, if you donÕt mind, Gregory.Ó I deliberately used his first name too.

ÒIt only needs a coat of paint. YouÕre just trying to up the job and make it cost more. Typical cowboy builder method.Ó

I could easily have hit him for that remark but with Louise there, I held myself in check. ÒWith the motor mower, strimmer, hedge cutter and all the other hand tools in there, thereÕs probably over two grandÕs worth of equipment and you want to complain over a few pounds of materials? Even an accountant should see that is most unwise.Ó

ÒGregory,Ó Louise cut in quietly, her voice quivering slightly with controlled anger, ÒIf you can fix this door with a coat of paint, then get out of your office, leave your computer and do it.Ó She waited a few moments before going on, ÒI thought not. If it doesnÕt involve pushing a mouse or opening a spreadsheet, you are completely out of your depth and useless. ThatÕs why I do all the gardening and decorating and such repairs as I can. People come to you for investment advice because you are familiar with stock markets and such-like and they know you know what you are talking about. IÕm asking George for advice on this rotten wood because thatÕs his job and he knows what needs doing. I shall, if he agrees to help, be doing the work, so the extra cost will be minimal. If that means he comes over here or I have to work in his workshop, so be it. You can watch from your office or come and check but I must ask you to keep your opinions to yourself and not presume to know more about it than someone who has learned the trade. Now IÕm sure you have other work to do.Ó

IÕd never heard her speak to him like that before and it amused me to see how red his face went and he blustered a bit before turning on his heels and returning inside.

ÒI hope I didnÕt put you in an impossible position George, he just wanted to belittle you and my efforts. What are my chances of doing the job? The tools I have are fairly limited as is my skill.Ó

ÒWith a little help from your friends?Ó She smiled and nodded. ÒVery good, but youÕll have to make a complete new door as it is a non standard size and if you try and repair this one, it will only last a year or so and then youÕll have to make another anyway.Ó

ÒCan I put a window in it?Ó

ÒYes, with even more help from your friends, but it will mean more work and take longer. LetÕs see if we can find some sound wood higher up to fix the bottom hinge temporarily and measure up to see what materials weÕll need.Ó

Over the next few weeks, mainly at evenings and weekends, Louise spent many hours in my workshop and I enjoyed her company and she seemed to enjoy mine. At 34 years old, even in her ÔworkÕ or gardening clothes, she looked very attractive and her sense of humour complimented my own. Not only that, sheÕd inherent practical skills, enjoyed working with wood and, with only minor mistakes, made a good job of the door and of replacing the shed front. Partly to prolong her company, I suggested we re-felt the roof. It would need doing in a year or two anyway but wasnÕt in dire need at the time. Finally she proudly painted the door bright green and creosoted the surrounding new woodwork, something Greg complained about because the smell pervaded her clothing. All through our time together, we behaved correctly and the only time I held her hand was to remove a splinter that entered her thumb. Gregory never came to check on her while in my workshop but we knew he watched when we worked outside and, while he didnÕt directly stop her from working with me, made snide remarks about her doing a tradesmanÕs work and became angry if he saw us laughing and joking together.

All too soon, from my point of view and I think from hers too, we finished the job and I only saw her when out in the garden. Six weeks went by and then, one evening, I answered a knock on the door and to my astonishment she stood on the doorstep. ÒGeorge, feel free to say no, but I miss the woodworking and working in your shop and I wondered if you would mind if I made a couple of Christmas presents? IÕd like to make a jewellery box for mother and a box for Gregory. His would be a surprise gift and perhaps heÕll realise that I have some talent for woodwork and I can do things other than cook his meals, wash and iron his shirts and decorate the house. I thought for him, a box like they have for collections in churches would be a good idea. He puts all his 5p and 10p pieces in a bottle at the moment and when itÕs full, he donates it to charity, so I thought a nice box with a coin slot in the top and some way of getting the money out later would be a good idea.Ó Of course, I was only too pleased to have her company again but I wondered how she managed to persuade Gregory to let her do it. ÒI told him I was going to do it whether he liked it or not. I need a bit of freedom to do my own thing,Ó she said. Over the weeks it took to make the boxes, I learned that all was not well in their relationship, although she didnÕt go into details.

We decided on mahogany boxes, dovetailed together and with chip-carved decoration. I added the refinements, again to prolong her time with me, because she would need to practice the techniques before working on the boxes. More frequently now we ÔaccidentallyÕ touched each other but always the action was covert. Never did we hug or kiss. Only once did Gregory call round and then only to bring a visitor friend of LouiseÕs who didnÕt wish to come to my workshop in the dark. He opened the door abruptly and without knocking so we guessed he half hoped to find us in a compromising situation. As it happened we were at separate benches, me gluing up a frame and her chipping away at her carving.

A week before Christmas both boxes were finished, in fact they were finished before that but we found the need to keep applying more wax and buffing it up to enhance the finish. In truth, it made little or no difference but both of us tried to believe it did. That weekend she packed her motherÕs box and made two hour drive to give the present to her. They didnÕt see each other too often and her mother opened it straightaway. ÒShe was over the moon with it and could not believe IÕd made it,Ó Louise told me later, ÒI had to explain all the processes before she was convinced I hadnÕt bought it. She said to say Ôthank youÕ to you for showing me how.Ó IÕm sure she half expected Gregory to do the same when he received his, but it was not to be.

Early on Christmas morning, a knock on the kitchen window while I prepared breakfast, alerted me to Louise crying outside. Putting the box on the kitchen table she sobbed on to my chest while I held her tightly. ÒWhat happened Louise? I guess he didnÕt like it.Ó

Several minutes later sheÕd composed herself enough to tell me. He unpacked it, looked at it for no more than two seconds before tossing it on the bed and said, ÒAt which car boot sale did you buy this ugly thing?Ó IÕm sure he knew I made it and that youÕd helped. Probably it was a reaction to all the time I spent with you that made him reject it in such a horrible way. When I started crying he just ordered me to finish packing ready to spend the two days over Christmas at his motherÕs.Ó I continued to hug and comfort her until another knock on the window. Gregory peered in and when he had our attention signalled Louise to come out and go with him. She shook her head no and I held her tightly. I thought he would come in and try to take her by force but after some hesitation, he turned and left. IÕm no macho man but my work keeps me fit, his sedentary, computer based occupation, made him soft and overweight and I knew the outcome of any tussle would be in my favour. Minutes later we heard his car drive off.

Expecting to be alone, I hadnÕt intended to celebrate Christmas but, by raiding our two freezers, we rustled up a decent meal and afterwards settled on the sofa in front of a wood fire and cuddled and kissed while we half watched the TV. Louise exclaimed it was much nicer than visiting her mother-in-law and I agreed it was the most pleasant Christmas IÕd had for several years. The mood became more sombre towards the end of the evening. ÒGeorge, I know you are expecting me to sleep with you tonight and I know I too will be very disappointed if I donÕt, but IÕm still a married woman and half hope that this will change his attitude towards me. If I sleep and have sex with you, yes, I know weÕve almost gone that far already, he can accuse me of infidelity and I wonÕt be able to deny the truth of it, but if I use the spare room or go home, I can say with honesty that we didnÕt have sex. IÕd prefer to stay here if I can trust you not to come creeping in at night and having your wicked way with me.Ó Disappointment must have shown on my face and for a little while I wondered if I was just a pawn in her game, but I didnÕt think so, and agreed she could stay and have a room to herself.

Boxing Day dawned bright and cold so we went for a walk in the nearby park before retiring to the fireside. Greg came back that evening but we didnÕt see him, although we heard the car. We expected him to come knocking on the door but he didnÕt, nor did he come round for the following two days. We found out later, his mother advised him to get shot of her and find someone more suitable. ÒMost likely heÕll come when he needs a clean shirt or runs out of precooked meals,Ó Louise grinned but looked worried. She kept close to me in the workshop each day so as not to be caught alone by him. Fortunately sheÕd brought much of her personal stuff over on Boxing Day so she didnÕt have to visit his house.

The status quo lasted until New YearÕs Eve. That afternoon Greg came storming into the workshop, obviously drunk and demanded, ÒAre you ready to stop being a whore to this peasant and return to your wifely duties? IÕm sure he cannot support you in the same way as I can. HeÕs probably screwed you all he wants now and can look for someone else.Ó I clenched my fists ready to punch him for the insult, but Louise signalled me to refrain.

ÒGo back home Greg,Ó for the first time I heard her use the shortened version of his name, ÒYou have more money but to you IÕm only a show piece. Someone you can take to dinners and functions, someone to do your laundry and get your meals. It may surprise you to know, IÕve not been fucked since the last time you did it. How many months ago was that? Last April, while we were on holiday in Paris? Eight months ago. I really, really thought that by making you a very special gift with my own hands, a gift that took many hours of careful work requiring learning new skills, and not something ordered over the Internet in five minutes, would bring us closer together but your reaction tore us apart. I waited until you came and tried to apologise before committing adultery but that was a waste of time. Go home Greg. IÕll come over tomorrow and collect my things when youÕve recovered from the booze and you are in a better frame of mind.Ó

We didnÕt wait up to see the New Year in. Sadness overcame Louise and nothing I could do lightened her mood. To her it seemed she was throwing away ten years of marriage, ten years of wasted life. IÕm sure she worried that she might be throwing away more of her life if she stayed with me. Several times she condemned herself for being the guilty party but I tried to argue that the guilt was forced upon her. At nine oÕclock she tore herself from my grasp and crying, rushed to her room.  For a long while I debated whether to follow her or leave her alone to sort things out in her mind. ÒWill my presence make her sadness worse or will I help her overcome it?Ó I debated without coming to a conclusion. In the end I tapped on her bedroom door and not getting a reply, opened it a crack and whispered, ÒLouise dear, if you need to talk or want some comfort, come into my room whatever the time of night. I wonÕt come in and interfere with you, no more than I have for the last week. I love you Louise and I wonÕt harm you.Ó

I couldnÕt sleep but intermittently dozed. Midnight came and the fireworks roused me, as did the opening of my door. Louise slid quietly into bed alongside me and I cradled her tightly to my body. ÒHappy New Year George, I hope this will be a happier one than the last.Ó Tears fell down her face and I tried to kiss them away. My hands gently massaged her breasts and she responded first with ardent kisses and then by stroking my rigid prick. ÒMake love to me George, love me please. IÕve waited too long for a real loving fuck.Ó We did and repeated the performance before breakfast.

Midday we decided Greg should have recovered from his hangover and went to collect her belongings. When he didnÕt answer the door, we used her key to get in. Greg lay on the floor, two empty whiskey bottles alongside him, but he roused himself enough to yell at us and ask what I was doing in his house. ÒTo protect Louise while she collects her clothes and stuff,Ó I replied trying to keep calm.

ÒYeah, let her collect her rags,Ó he slurred. A scream from the bedroom caused me to run to Louise. We stared in horror and amazement, every dress, every shoe, every item that could be cut was slashed to ribbons. Any ornaments and items that could be broken lay smashed in all corners of the room where theyÕd fallen after being thrown against the walls. The bathroom was in a similar state. Very little would be salvageable. ÒWeÕd better phone the police, itÕs your property heÕs ruined.Ó

IÕd just dialled 999 when Greg came into the bedroom holding a Stanley knife and threatened to slash us like he had her clothes. Quickly passing the phone to Louise, I prepared to defend her.  Wildly Greg waved the knife around as though he was in a sword fight. ÒIÕll cut you to ribbons first you peasant and then IÕll deal with that whore that was my wife,Ó he yelled. To defend myself I picked up a chair and used it as a shield against the erratic and unpredictable swinging of the knife. One such movement knocked the chair to one side and he slipped passed me screaming to Louise, ÒYouÕll never look pretty again when IÕve finished carving your face.Ó Louise dropped the phone and ran and I managed to get between him and her again. Fortunately his respite from a drunken stupor proved short lived and when he tripped over a small table and fell to the floor, he didnÕt get up.

Sirens blaring, blue lights flashing, the police arrived and took Greg away. The whole of the 999 call had been recorded, including his threats, so there was little doubt he intended to harm us and the evidence of the slashed clothing, the smashed ornaments and the trashed bedroom, added to it. We spent much of the day answering police questions but at least we ended up in each otherÕs arms and I could comfort her when the shock of what might have happened, overwhelmed her.

A year later, we have new neighbours, a middle-aged couple with a twenty-year-old daughter with a young baby. Louise gets on well with her, especially as our baby is due shortly. After a short spell in a mental institution for assessment and a six month suspended prison sentence, GregÕs drinking got the better of him and his business went downhill. The mortgage lenders foreclosed on the house and he now lives on benefits in a small apartment well on the other side of town. We havenÕt seen him since the trial.

The shed with its bright green door is still in the garden and each morning when we look out of the bedroom window, it reminds us how we first came together, although we didnÕt realise it at the time.
